The Coat of Arms of Steenvoorde

Steenvoorde is a small town of 4,128 inhabitants in the north of France. It is located in the middle of the Flemish hills and owes its name to a stone (steen) ford (voord) set up by the Romans while they were trying to find a way up north.

Steenvoorde has a church with three naves, the strong wooden vault of which is embellished with encarved pinacles in the Romanesque style.

There are also two wind-mills in Steenvoorde, the DRIEVENMEULEN and the NOORDMEULEN. They are revolving wooden mills built on the Flemish model.

The great spinning-wheel of the Drievenmeulen dates back to 1766. This mill was renovated in 1997.

The Noordmeulen dates from 1576 and was renovated in 1978. Its mechanism is from the 18th century and now turns again with the wind and mills corn during the sightseeing tours. Its framework weights 45 tons and the wingspread is of 20.5 meters.
